"What
is the proper mode of administering wealth after the laws upon which
civilization is founded have thrown it into the hands of the few?" -Andrew
Carnegie, 1889
The
preceding excerpt is from Andrew Carnegie's, "Gospel of Wealth,"
written 126 years ago, it remains a relevant and compelling question in the
minds of Americans today. This blog
will explore socioeconomic anxieties in America's historic timeline with the hope the reader may establish
concrete correlations between the past and present, and American socioeconomic inequality that has emerged.
This
blog will also focus on the concept of Social Darwinism, and will propose questions that challenge political ideology and the institutions that have contributed to the conundrum Carnegie presented, institutions which reinforce the current concentration of wealth in
America, just as they did over one hundred years ago.
